Welcome to Chalice Well
on the isle of Avalon
a holy well
Chalice Well is one of Britain’s most ancient holy wells, nestling in the Vale of Avalon between the famous Glastonbury Tor and Chalice Hill. For over two thousand years it has been a place of pilgrimage where people have gathered to drink the waters and find peace, healing and inspiration. Since 1959, Chalice Well has been safeguarded by a Trust which has charitable status. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and orchards it is a living sanctuary, a place that welcomes all people of goodwill, whatever their spiritual path or religious belief; a place where the visitor can experience the quiet healing power of the natural forces held within this landscape temple; a place to contemplate and meditate by the constant flowing waters in the valley beneath the Tor. at the foot of glastonbury tor within
a sacred garden
The Chalice Well and the main gardens are enfolded in the vale between Chalice Hill and the Tor and the garden’s landscape (or aspect) naturally rises upward from the bottom of the garden toward the well head at the top. The gardens progress from the open space of the lower lawns following the course of the waters to their source. It is a garden of many ‘rooms’ each with different qualities, features and planting, but all combine to create a living sanctuary of healing, sanctity and peace. whether visiting for an hour, a day or a week
a place of quiet retreat
Many people visit the gardens to experience the peace and unique atmosphere here. Visitors often speak of a sense of crossing a threshold and leaving the everyday behind. Sometimes just an hour spent in the gardens can be enough. But for those looking for a longer retreat or more personal experience, we offer a number of ways you can benefit from the peace and spiritually rejuvenating energies of Chalice Well. For a longer stay, we have two retreat houses, Little St Michaels and Chalice Well Lodge, which can be booked by room or, for groups, as a whole. Both houses have 24-hour access to the gardens; there is nothing else like the quiet of the gardens in the evening. We also have a light and airy, wood framed Meeting Room for holding meetings or workshops. Adjoined to Little St Michaels, the Meeting Room is perfectly situated for groups who wish to include workshops as part of their stay. Private Access gives you exclusive access to the gardens, outside public opening times. Either as an individual, a group simply wishing to enjoy the gardens or for celebrating and honouring a particular moment in life’s journey, you can book the gardens for a couple of hours, before we open or after we close. reconnect with nature, yourself and others at our
events and workshops
Our annual programme of events honours the seasons in nature which fall on days celebrated since ancient times. They are grounded in the common principles of community, stillness, blessing, communion, reflection, gratitude and celebration. That people gather together in a beautiful garden allows a shared acknowledgement of the sacred and the divine that transcends borders and differences. Read more on our events page…

essences practitioner
We offer a series of practical and experiential workshops designed for practitioners, healers and therapists, but also open to anyone with an interest in vibrational essences who wishes to connect with the healing energies of the Chalice Well. Co-created and produced by the Chalice Well Trust in the Chalice Well Gardens, Glastonbury, Chalice Well Essences support and empower the healing journey, bringing love, balance, strength, and encouragement. “There are certain geographical spots or centres where (…) the veil is ‘thinner’ than elsewhere (…that) are considered suitable for becoming spiritual and healing oases (…) through which light can pass down into our human atmosphere more easily than is the case elsewhere. Chalice Well is one such centre.” – Wellesley Tudor Pole from ‘Light on the Path’ Read more on our Chalice Well Essences page…
a place within which to experience peace and from which to
take peace into the world
To be at the well head, to drink the water and absorb the atmosphere in the gardens can be a truly inspirational experience. As a Companion recently wrote to us: “While there are many reasons why I have returned to Chalice Well over the years, the one constant theme is peace; a deep inward peace that can carry me through the tides of life. I know of no other place that provides this so perfectly and so deeply as Chalice Well.”
